Cancun, a perennial favorite among American travelers seeking sun-soaked getaways, is facing a significant challenge to its tourism dominance. The rise of Punta Cana, coupled with operational issues at Cancun International Airport, inclusivity and growing security concerns, is prompting U.S. tourists to reassess their vacation choices. While Cancun remains one of the top tourism destination for Americans, popularity is beginning to shift.
Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR) reported Cancun’s international passenger numbers have seen a dip, with the airport reporting 3.76 million passengers in early 2025, down from 4.13 million in the same period of 2024, representing nearly a 9% decline. However, a portion of the decline can be attributed to the new international airport in Tulum.

Airport Frustration: A Rocky Start for American Vacations
The initial point of contact for many American tourists, Cancun International Airport, is becoming a source of increasing frustration. Despite Governor Mara Lezama’s efforts to improve passenger experience by training 90 customs and National Guard personnel, operational and technological inefficiencies continue to affect the airport.
“We expect a smooth arrival,” said one American traveler arriving in Cancun, reflecting a common sentiment. “The delays and inconsistent procedures are not the way we want to begin our vacation.”

Jesús Almaguer, president of the Cancún, Puerto Morelos, and Isla Mujeres Hotel Association (AHCPMIM), has been vocal about the airport’s shortcomings, citing malfunctioning technology, lengthy baggage claim lines, and a lack of modern solutions like facial recognition. Almaguer’s criticism highlights a growing perception among American tourists that Cancun’s airport is falling behind international standards.
Punta Cana’s Ascendancy: Perceived Security & Affordability
Punta Cana is experiencing a surge in popularity among American travelers, drawn by the Dominican Republic’s easy access, strategic infrastructure investments, and competitive all-inclusive resort pricing. A key factor influencing travel decisions is the perception of safety. While both Cancun and Punta Cana operate under a Level 2 travel advisory, many tourists express a feeling of greater tranquility and security in Punta Cana’s resort-centric environment.
This perception is shaped by several factors. Negative media coverage of specific incidents in Cancun, even if statistically isolated, can create unease among potential travelers, amplified by social media discussions. Additionally, while both locations experience crime, the nature of reported incidents differs. Cancun has seen more reports of gang-related violence, which, even if rare for tourists, can generate heightened fear compared to Punta Cana’s more commonly reported petty theft. Consequently, many American travelers perceive Punta Cana’s controlled resort settings, less urban proximity, and differing media narratives as contributing to a greater sense of safety.

The affordability of Punta Cana’s all-inclusive packages is another significant draw. “We’re looking for value,” said an American couple. “Punta Cana offers comparable amenities at a more budget-friendly price.” This value proposition, coupled with the Dominican Republic’s focus on resort-based relaxation, is proving to be a compelling alternative for many Americans.
Cancun’s Challenges: Beyond Airport Delays
While airport frustrations and security concerns are paramount, Cancun faces additional challenges. Increasing tourism taxes and reports of criminal activity in Quintana Roo are contributing to a sense of unease among American travelers.

Central and South American Tourism: Adding to Cancun’s Woes
Adding to Cancun’s challenges is a marked decline in tourism from Central and South America. Reports of mistreatment and denied entry for Brazilian and Colombian tourists at Cancun International Airport have significantly eroded trust in the destination. This isn’t merely a localized issue; it’s a symptom of a larger problem. The accumulation of negative news, ranging from airport inefficiencies and security concerns to reports of discriminatory treatment, is creating a perception of instability and unreliability. Such narratives spread rapidly in the digital age, influencing not only potential tourists from the affected regions but also impacting the broader international community.

For American travelers, this cascade of negative reports raises serious questions about the overall experience they can expect. It’s not just about the inconvenience of airport delays or the fear of crime; it’s about the fundamental sense of being welcomed and respected. When reports surface of certain groups being treated unfairly, it raises concerns about the destination’s commitment to hospitality and inclusivity. This can lead to a general sense of unease and a reluctance to invest time and money in a vacation where the experience might be marred by unforeseen problems or a sense of distrust. The perception that Cancun is becoming an unwelcoming destination damages its reputation as a reliable and enjoyable vacation spot, ultimately affecting its economic stability and long-term appeal.

“There’s no seriousness,” stated Almaguer, referring to the airport’s handling of South American tourists. “The technology they announced isn’t working.” The perception that Cancun is unwelcoming to these key demographics further damages the destination’s overall image and impacts its economic stability.
Hoteliers are even taking action on their own to try and reestablish trust in Cancun by offering refunds to those being turned away by immigration. The Cancún, Puerto Morelos, and Isla Mujeres Hotel Association (AHCPMIM) has decided to reimburse hotel expenses to tourists who have been turned away by immigration authorities upon arrival at the airport. According to its president, Jesús Almaguer Salazar, this measure is taken “out of dignity”, although the National Migration Institute (INM) should be the one to assume the cost.”
Data Reflects Shifting Market Dynamics
Tourism trends reveal a dynamic landscape in the Caribbean, with both Punta Cana and Cancun vying for traveler attention. Cancun remains a consistently popular and high-volume tourist destination, attracting a large number of international visitors due to its well-established infrastructure and diverse entertainment options. However, Punta Cana has emerged as a rising star, exhibiting significant growth in recent years of 43% over 2019 passenger arrivals.
This surge in popularity is attributed to its appealing all-inclusive resort packages, perceived value, and a more relaxed atmosphere. While Cancun continues to attract a large and varied audience, Punta Cana’s upward trajectory suggests a shift in traveler preferences, with more individuals seeking a tranquil and cost-effective beach vacation. Recent reports also indicate a growing number of travelers opting for the Dominican Republic over Mexico, further fueling Punta Cana’s expanding market share.

The Future of Cancun’s Tourism
For Cancun to maintain its position as a leading Caribbean destination, it must address the operational inefficiencies at its airport, enhance security measures, focus on clear immigration procedures for inclusivity and maintain a competitive value proposition. The destination must also work to regain the trust of Central and South American travelers which is one of the destinations largest markets.
American tourists seek seamless, safe, and enjoyable vacation experiences. Cancun must adapt to meet these expectations or risk losing its position to increasingly attractive alternatives like Punta Cana. The evolving dynamics between these two destinations will continue to shape the future of Caribbean tourism. Let us know in the comments below which destination is your favorite!
